Recognized genius painter Théodore Géricault exhibited The Raft of the Medusa, a realistic depiction of a tragic accident, at the Salon and brought about controversy. 1816年、フリゲート艦“メデューズ号”がモーリタニア沖で座礁する。急ごしらえの救命ボートの筏は150名近くを乗せ13日間漂流したあげく他の船によって発見されたが、生存者はわずか15名にすぎなかった。時のフランス復古王政政府はこの事件をひた隠しにしたが、漂流期間中、筏の上では殺人、食人を含む様々な非人間的行為が行われたことが明るみに出てしまう。ショッキングなこの事件を題材に大作を描きサロンでスキャンダルを巻き起こしたのはテオドール・ジェリコー。彼はいったいこの事件に何を見たのか。「起こったことを精確に描く」ため、死体をアトリエに置き観察するなど常軌を逸した行いに世間は戦慄するが、ジェリコーは人間の本性を暴き出そうとするその真摯なまでの信念に突き動かされていく。19世紀初頭、ロマン主義、印象派などに先駆けて「近代絵画の先駆者」といわれる画家の、人間の本質へと迫る半生を描く。
