Espers have powers.
Guides heal espers. 

There is usually a type of ranking system like; SSS rank (aka S+), S rank, A rank, ect. Compatibility percents are common themes. The highest the compatibility the better the guiding.

Espers are the ones with the supernatural powers. These power take a toll on them and corrupt them. The higher their corruption the greater risk they are of losing control and basically going off like a bomb. The higher the rank the worse the damage of them going off would be. This is why guides are so important to espers.

Guides treat espers with physical contact, the more intimate the better the guiding. Guides and Espers usually need to be close in rank for the guiding (treatment) to be beneficial.

Note that authors can take creative liberty but these are usually the base fundamentals.
